Sunshine

The people who stand with you during the storm
Those who come out the other side dripping wet
Those who understand what you've been through
Are those who should stand with you while the sun is shining.

I have been through a storm
And my heart was torn apart by thrashing rain
And my soul whipped by winds

When the storm started
I did not know who would come out the other side.
And I was surprised by some who stayed
Who understood
Who really cared
And I was strangely unsurprised by those who left.

I think I always expected it
When times get hard and decisions are made to benefit one person
The other decides to do the same
And ignore the black clouds raging over their friend's head.

But it's okay
Because now I am strong.
And now I am free
And the sun is shining
Because I realise that this is the best I can hope for
And these people make me the best I can be
And I don't need everything I thought I needed
To be this happy
And this safe
And this content.

So thank you for everything you did
Although I don't regret us parting-
I hope you enjoy your own sunshine
While I enjoy mine.
